Video game adaptations in Hollywood have made a comeback recently, with titles such as The Last of Us, Mortal Kombat , Five Nights at Freddy’s and more. Fallout is the most recent entry on this list. The best-selling Bethesda Game Studios’ game comes on Amazon Prime Video via Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Consequently, we get to experience an extensive dystopian drama that is also filled with dark humour and gore.

Plot

The story of Fallout has been divided into three characters; these individuals eventually converge at some point in their lives. Ella Purnell’s Lucy is first up, a sunny Vault-dweller who ventures above the Earth for a private quest. She meets a persistent bounty hunter played by Walton Goggins, who hides some unexpected secrets including one that has made him look like Voldemort himself and a Ghoul like hideous scarred person . Finally, Aaron Moten’s Maximus forms the third part of trio whereby the young man becomes entangled in the cult-like Brotherhood of Steel as he seeks purpose in his life. While other things are always changing these points remain stable through out.

Fallout: Writing and Direction

In order to set up viewers with this universe; the series dips its toes into various genres. In essence, Vault represents an efficient controlled underground world which seems to be trapped in its own time but below which 1950s rockabilly music plays. Above ground exhibits violent elements reminiscent of those found in anarchic westerns where literally anything can happen any second quite literally anything can happen . Then there are futuristic features like outdated-looking technology used currently.

Nolan directs a few of early episodes setting the tone for Fallout , but that’s also down to writers Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner who balance absurdity, drama and comedy in an interesting way especially with Purnell’s character involved . However when it stopped each time it was as if the screen had frozen and we were about to be shown an advert after each one of these elements. Such a shift is visible in older shows that were specifically made for television . But here , the fades to black just confused me.

Fallout: Performances

Forever goodness and light in Fallout, but Goggins is its dark brooding night of this sci-fi western. The actor who goes through a significant physical transformation to play this walking dead-like “Ghoul”. Still, Ghoul has goals that he cannot let go of. His presence alone makes the whole series interesting. Purnell also causes us to become attached emotionally during her journey with yellow jacket as well. Moten is joined by Kyle MacLachlan , Moises Arias , Sarita Choudhury , Lost’s Michael Emerson and Dale Dickey all make their mark on this show. Chris Parnell’s role in one of the last episodes seemed like it came from either sketches he did on Saturday Night Live or Dr Spaceman from 30 Rock.

The Last of Us is a little different, but there are many comparisons because we instantly connected with Joel and Ellie in the HBO series, unlike the main trio, which seemed to take longer. But Fallout’s scope appears bigger and even with all that carnage on the screen, it feels like the show has just began. There are a lot of things for characters to stumble onto and several secrets hidden away. I can’t wait to see what happens next. All eight episodes of Fallout are now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
