Neal Brennan’s stand-up special, Neal Brennan: Crazy Good comes from The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. In his third original comedy special, Neal Brennan riffs on crypto, social media, sex compliments, trauma not being a vibe, millionaire mindsets, and his ever-evolving views on mental health and relationships.

Neal Brennan is an American comedian, writer, producer, director and podcaster. In late 2022 Brennan launched the popular comedy podcast “Blocks” to support his previous special of the same name. He also has a half-hour featured on “Comedians of the World”. Known for co-creating and co-writing Chappelle’s Show with Dave Chappelle (2003–2004), their comedy is very different so don’t knock this out if you do not like Chappelle; it’s worth your while.

Brennan starts straight up at the stage of his set. No fancy introduction but the backdrop is arty and fun – greenish virus-like thingy. Brennan begins by telling everyone he feels pretty good today. He is really endearing – someone you could easily be friends with.

He talks about using AI to come up with opening lines for comedy shows; read below what hilarious example AI gave him: “Good evening p*s.” His jokes are quick firing one after another without exhausting a story until we are thinking how much can he milk this? I enjoyed his fiery energy and excellent comedic timing.

But some comics are not skilled enough to have perfect comedic timing that we always think they possess.Notheless Brennen does! From an open to a beat to a punchline; he nailed it thus making it have an amazing flow throughout his set. Some jokes require specific timing for them to have an impact otherwise they can be missed or flop. What about this one:“I was dating a model… I was following a model”. It made me laugh hard. I saw it coming but it still got me.

Brennan’s 50s set is for all audiences, I was shocked when I googled his age as he has that millennial, moaning depressed but happy persona down to a T.

There are so many entertaining sections in this hour, but I think my favorite is his part on trauma flexing because its very hilarious. It not only relatable but also the way he gets those who talk about trauma is just dope. Throughout his set Brennan uses voices and some physicality to aid his jokes. Most of it though is him up near the audience leaning over on his knees making you feel like he’s having a real conversation with, accusing, or questioning you.

He makes some jokes about rape and provokes cringy gasps from the audience when it comes to a pedophile joke. This is what Brits like me live for.

Like Demetri Martin’s recent stand-up, Demetri Deconstructed; there are sections during edits for the viewers at home while Brennan keeps his little stage face in the corner of the screen. This works for me because it isn’t too much but does break up the flow.

I laughed a lot during Neal Brennan: Crazy Good at further jokes about anxiety, documentaries, food, relationships and a bloody funny section on religion. Also since he performed so energetically throughout the hour- time really flew by. I had never watched Neal Brennan before this show but I definitely will now.
