The second part of three for The Walking Dead’s supersized last season, starts with a literal bang. Episode nine of “No Other Way” brings Meridian storyline to an end by a deadly showdown between murderous Reapers and Maggie’s (Lauren Cohan) infiltrators. The entire settlement is at risk as the Alexandrians struggle to survive through flooding water, zombies and fire. The mid-season premiere had several fantastic twists that reframed the series. A shocking final scene sets up an intriguing new conflict between dear friends.
“No Other Way”, finds Leah (Lynn Collins) raining explosive arrows down on the Meridian courtyard. Maggie remits arrow into Reaper. It detonates him: she seeks refuge in infirmary where she meets Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari), who are both injured there too; Carver is after them so they hide in a secret room.
In Alexandria, Judith (Cailey Flemming) and Gracie (Anabelle Holloway) are trapped in the flooding basement as walkers break through. Upstairs in the house tells Lydia(Cassady McClincy), Dianne(Kerry Cahill says that the girls are missing from Rosita(Christian Serratos). Outside Jerry(Cooper Andrews) and Aaron(Ross Marquand found shelter from the windmill fire in Carol’s(Melissa McBride). She will fight it while Magna(Nadia Hilker and Connie(Lauren Ridloff)) try to find another hole in the wall; they hear Grace blowing her emergency whistle.
That morning in Meridian was peaceful as Daryl killed a person who wanted to kill Gabriel Fathern(Seth Gilliam). He stabs him with his knife avoiding recognition by Leah who was looking for him. Girls stand on table while water fills with walkers downstairs. Aaron arrives and bashes through a window at them using his mace arm. He jumps in to water and starts smashing walker skulls. Aaron lifts Gracie and Judith to the window but can’t get out. More walkers come as the stairwell breaks.
In Meridian’s chapel, Gabriel meets Father Mancea (Dikran Tulaine). The Reapers’ priest is cursed by him due to his teaching their bloodshedding. Mancea tells Gabriel that he doesn’t hear God. Mancea drops his weapon and extends his hand toward Gabriel. Afterward, Gabriel stabs him in the heart flowing by Carver chasing after Maggie; she leads him into a trap where they’ll fight against each other: Negan, her and Elijah (he wants him dead for murdering his sister). Negan throws sand in Carver’s face before Daryl comes just in time to prevent Maggie from killing him; he radios Leah who informs them that Carver is their only way out.
Rosita hears Gracie’s whistle too asking Lydia to go outside through cellar while Aaron has climbed on the pipe above ceiling away from walkers which breaks with his legs hanging down but Lydia sees this ropes are tied on the post as she hurries up freeing her friend from smoke engulfing building.
Daryl comes into the courtyard with others in tow, dragging a restrained Carver behind him giving Maggie a gun while Leah arrives with two last Reapers; seeing these two last reapers, Daryl requests them to drop their weapons and leave them alone thereby having a chance of getting out alive yet Leah has got another sniper standing atop the roof whom she commands to shoot at Maggie but not before Elijah lets off some steam through killing one of those Reapers
Carver gets shot in the leg with a sniper bullet. The sniper is killed by Gabriel, and he has Leah’s team into sight. Leah asked if they were still in business. Maggie won’t let Carver go. Maggie kills the last two men and shoots Leah running away at first as the Reapers turn their backs. Daryl stands motionless and runs after her. She takes Elijah’s scythe while he watches it all happen to her. She thrusts it into Carver’s heart, she does.
Alden (Callan McAuliffe) injured needs to be taken from the church by Maggie who goes off for him leaving through the door past Negan who watches her walk away from him like this.Maggie breaks open the door of the church only to find a transformed Alden writhing on its floor.She cries as she ends her friend’s suffering.Alden is buried by Maggie.Adding salt to injury, Negan approaches Maggie and stops his burial.He then asks her not to kill him, but she holds firmly onto her knife.Negan leaves abruptly.“I am out” are his words of departure.
On the road again with Daryl, Elijah, Gabriel and herself; so she speaks.Yesterday morning Alexandria was no more than rubble.His query was “where are all others?”With friends coming back home there are tears.Children come back to their parents.Daryl sees Connie alive and is very happy.Negan did not return which made Lydia unhappy.They have lost Alden.Suddenly Jerry blows the trumpet.
Alexandria gate awaits Commonwealth soldiers.Eugene (Josh McDermitt) hurries ahead of them to ease any tension.Food is here brought by these soldiers as well as energy sources and materials used for construction.Eugene introduces Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton), who represents Commonwealth community.He offers Alexandria assistance or even joining them.
The label reads SIX MONTHS LATER, Maggie and Elijah are on the wall of Hilltop.Communities soldiers stand together in front of that place.Commander shouts open.Maggie responds,” it doesn’t have to be this way.”The soldier who is wearing his mask and helmet removes them.Daryl tells her furiously, “Yeah…it does.”
Another major narrative shift came with the Walking Dead’s abrupt passage of time.It was no longer a six-year period after Rick vanishing but a huge twist nonetheless. A commune that employs Daryl seems like science fiction.It can also be said that he still hasn’t gotten over what she did in Meridian.In all fairness though, I do not think he would ever really threaten her.However, there were some people from Alexandria who embraced The Commonwealth.Which sets up new conflict between old allies and possibly not so good colony.
“No Other Way” proved to be an amazing episode.What has happened will make me happy because Maggie ended the Reaper story line with action and leadership decisions.The problem is what she told him about those Commonwealth orders.Will Eugene find out that Stephanie is Lance Hornsby’s fake employee? They’re both independent agents who are Leah and Negan by now.I am interested to understand how they come into play.Twenty-four episodes will make up The Walking Dead’s final season.
