Why can one be justified in the idea of killing someone? What if it is among your closest friends? This implies that even a good friend of Candy Montgomery’s in Wylie, Texas, is not immune to punishment if her reasons are sufficient. Aged thirty at the time of the occurrence, Montgomery was a mother of two children who cheated on her husband with her best friend’s spouse. One day after the best friend’s husband had left town, he showed up before Candy with proof about their affair and that led to him and Candy fighting over an axe. The result was uncontrolled fury that ended by killing the friend and disfiguring her features almost beyond recognition.

The murder of Betty Gore rocked the small Texas town where both women resided as they were known to each other through their regular attendance at church. It took place in court that she argued it happened in self-defense. Surprisingly enough, this case resulted in a verdict that said she was innocent. Although this verdict received mixed reviews, it has also become a never-ending mystery for those involved with real-life crime stories such as.Multiple books, TV shows and podcasts have been dedicated to recounting how these two friends changed into enemies thus making this story something as old as the hills.

As we approach forty years later since then, Hulu has just released a miniseries based on what happened between Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore . By July 2020 , the show had already entered development stage while by end year ; it had secured a streaming platform –Hulu. It is written by Nick Antosca (Brand New Cherry Flavor; Channel Zero) and Robin Veith (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit). For instance , Both writers have a history in writing horror or crime related materials hence making them an ideal duo for this series.

Jessica Biel plays Candy Montgomery while Melanie Lynskey is Betty Gore . However, Biel recently scored huge success on NBC’s police drama The Sinner but this time she has changed gear into the role of a murderer. Lynskey too, has had a number of recent victories: featuring in 2021’s Don’t Look Up alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio as well as being a recurring cast member on the drama Yellowjackets. The support cast in Candy features an unrecognizable Pablo Schreiber, Timothy Simons, and Raúl Esparza.

At the beginning of Candy there is a creepy monologue by Biel’s character while it talks about “The next time you’re sad because you didn’t get what you want, you just wait.” She smirks and looks blankly at the camera. Her husband sits across from her but that hasn’t been made clear yet. Next frame says ‘the night before’. It has visuals that remind one of America during its early stages when crimes were like diseases.

These are the places that Candy’s camera stares at in a domestic manner. The first episode shows that female characters can be categorized into traditional gender roles. As for Betty, she spends much of her time in the house where she is involved in sewing, vacuuming and bidding goodbye to her husband on his way to a business trip. In the scene before he leaves dramatically, Betty says that she fears being pregnant again with another child when already having one newborn baby in the family who might be too much to deal with soon after all. She expresses concerns about not wanting to get pregnant so as to teach which although it is an improvement from being just a housewife still falls within the realm of women’s roles prescribed by society.

It contrasts sharply against Betty’s life style. At this point, her kids have grown up and we see her attending beauty pageants, going to church and telling stories to young children around town. For example, while Betty appears entirely isolated from other people around him or her world or whatever else you may call it (I’m not sure I understand what you mean here), Candy loves socializing with others thus making him/her a sociable butterfly among human beings in general; however, there is only but one slip because we happen to see him covered with blood arriving at home after which this scene cuts back into the story leaving it for us viewers guessing since no details are given concerning such bloodshed yet: [Also] This happened before candy had a particular thing of interest: she started her own company long ago. In its pilot episode, she tells a man of God about it; however, even before Candy went into detailed explanations about their operations he describes it as “a feminine touch”, revealing his personal attitude towards such business moves.

Before turning into whodunit and legal drama series though, suspense plays prominently throughout: especially during most parts of its first episode where everything revolves around finding out where exactly Betty is. This is a sensational murder, but there are no nerves that could be cut with the knife in order to create an organic pacing. It trips on its arc, toeing the line between a character study or being a traditional true crime show.

In fact, this dynamic is established right from the inception of this mini-series in its first episode. In addition, it takes us step by step through every detail concerning Betty’s death that includes texts that state the time when these things happened within the movie (saying “occurs” here instead of “happened” would have been better). It starts off with Betty as part of story telling how she lives her everyday life at home but then suddenly she disappears leaving only Bill and Candy behind. Everything starts looking alike because of the monochromatic color scheme as if they were all products gone awry in boring Texas.

Another interesting decision for this show is to focus more on who did it rather than who was killed. In other words, Betty’s story serves as a perfect foil for what will happen to Candy; and Lynskey has successfully provided her with an impressive backstory for Betty too. The problem [where] lies in Candy using her as well as her mother, which makes me feel somehow disappointed that outside being wife who can be called perfect for somebody always on move (such a pity), does not become a partner not just for Reddick but also for Becca although many might think it absurd since he must have had second thoughts about marrying such woman according to him: As we learn later during this movie, this may sound like nothing but tragedy since what really made them different couldn’t be anything else except individual preferences towards doing what they loved most i.e., teaching while refraining from getting pregnant even though betty says so herself (“I don’t want another child after having one who’s still young”). She was not exactly the preferred housewife in this neighborhood compared to others.

This is one of the highlights of the show: Candy played by Jessica Biel is an unsettling character who looks like a superficial white suburban mom but embodies a cold-blooded murderer. She appears to be telling a story while talking on her cell phone to her husband about how she missed the beauty pageant, and in doing so she seems to be lying to everybody else, including herself. In case this show became all about her character analysis alone, it would have been saved.

Candy is very self-assured and entrepreneurial leader, who showcased herself in this sense before others. Whenever she is by herself, or feels really upset or annoyed however much she tries not to show it; Candy’s facade gets shattered. The real Candy is not what you see on stage. This is why Candy’s character serves as double role as well because for instance she can fool those around her completely. She comes out from that murder all bloodied up and shaken leaving her home with some drops of blood at its front gates thus for few seconds it may appear that Candy will not be able to keep under wraps consequences of her actions’ extent either. It’s in these small moments that viewers realize there’s nothing perfect about these women’s lives that once must have seemed like perfect suburban life.

These struggles are evident through Betty’s sighs; baby cries becoming louder or children’s wails when they start becoming rowdier for example irritate Candy greatly because of rigid gender norms and high expectations placed on mothers. And maybe that is what this series at heart means, delving into the psychological effects of living such kind of life as a woman. No matter whether she was never prosecuted for the killing but cannot justify how candy murdered anyone before being arrested since it was simply environment where she found herself, filled with stress which burst out in weakness.

Titled Love and Death, a new HBO Max series has been announced with premiere dates set for 2022. The miniseries will cover the same topic as Candy, but it will star Elizabeth Olsen in the titular role and Jesse Plemons as her co-star. It should come as no surprise that the world’s obsession with true crime shows has resulted in two different television series about this case within a year; after all, what happened to Candy Montgomery is terrifying. Although it may be doubtful if Candy passes Bechdel Test or not, this is a cautionary tale of failed female camaraderie, even though. However maybe HBO Max’s take on the incident and its dramatization will go down better than this edition but only Time will reveal if it does.
