Apple TV+ has released a new nature docuseries from Jon Favreau and the producers of Planet Earth. “Prehistoric Planet” is a fresh look at lost worlds with narration by none other than Sir David Attenborough, the eminent natural historian! This groundbreaking documentary uses mind-blowing state-of-the-art CGI to create different kinds of dinosaurs that appear as though they are in front of you. BBC’s Prehistoric Planet is a major dinosaur-centered docuseries, which was earlier followed by 2011’s Planet Dinosaur. It represents only its third such series, after Walking With Dinosaurs (1999) and The Lost World.
The official synopsis for Prehistoric Planet reads: “A documentary that follows dinosaurs recreated with computer-generated imagery living around the globe in the Late Cretaceous period, 66 million years ago. It set out to depict dinosaurs using current paleontological research such as feathered dinosaurs. The docuseries is produced by Natural History Unit at BBC Studios in collaboration with photorealistic visual effects from MPC which were applied to concept art provided by Jellyfish Pictures.” Watch the official trailer for Prehistoric Planet below.
In an interview with National World, Jon Favreau discusses recent technological advancements that have made it possible for dinosaurs to be viewed on small screens through animation technology that is cutting-edge.” We’ve been here for less than one million years while in this same period alone there have been dinosaurs for one hundred million years,” Mr.Favreau says. “If we went back 15 or 20 years ago we would never have seen something like feathered animals like this.” When Jurassic Park came out, which was one of my favorite applications of early CGI graphics, there were scales and skin and it taxed everything they had processing-wise. Well now we can do fur, we can do feathers – there’s so much more that’s available to us from a feasibility standpoint that really the research and our imaginations are the only limitations.”
He continues: “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that every time there’s a new technology everybody wants to show dinosaurs. The first time they did stop-motion, the first time they did CGI. Just look at the fascination with these animals since their discovery.” He also insisted that none of the animation was “done for flash”, but instead all of it was “set in the science”. Jon Favreau is synonymous with film making quality whenever he is associated with any new movie or TV series.
A pregnant tuarangisaurus is in distress, and her young calf can sense it, as she travels waters that are home to the ocean’s deadliest predators. All those featured in episode 1 of Prehistoric Planet including T-Rex, Carcharodontosaurus, Tethydraco, Phosphatodraco, Alcione Elainus, Barbaridactylus, Tuarangisaurus, Kaikaifilu, Mosasaurus Hoffmanni Archelon Turtle Pycnodont Ammonoid; In fact there were so many incredible special effects used throughout this entire season that some viewers began wondering if these dinosaurs really existed and were not props used during filming instead. Every single scene in this premiere episode showcased stunning locations that looked fantastic on screen as well which helped make them even more enticing.
The pervasive voice of Sir David Attenborough is always a hit, and he carries on with his iconic narration in this brand new wildlife documentary. He really has a lot to teach the audience from the first episode through the information and knowledge that he provides about these particular dinosaurs that were living during the Cretaceous period. Other episodes will discuss different habitats around the world as opposed to oceanic predators which were featured in the first one. This latest dinosaur film for those huge fans of dinosaurs sets an example for future dinosaur films. For those who cannot wait for Jurassic World: Dominion coming next month, it provides them with a perfect teaser.
Paleontologist and consultant Steve Brusatte said before its trailer release that this all-new docuseries had been under development for ten years. In Prehistoric Planet animals from the Cretaceous are depicted using contemporary paleontological research. Doctors Darren Naish, a palaeozoologist, Gabriel Ugueto who is science illustrator along with some other persons have contributed their knowledge about prehistoric world while filming this series.“This is absolutely unprecedented if you think about it because no TV show or movie about prehistoric life has ever employed their own paleontological consultant, let alone one that worked full-time on set.… It’s absolutely essential that we get scientific input like this and you’re seeing as close as possible to cutting-edge reconstructions of what we actually know.’’ Mentioned Dr Darren Naish.
The computer generated imagery (CGI) used in Prehistoric Planet was made by Moving Picture Company (MPC), which clearly aimed at photo-realism compared to their previous movies such as ‘The Jungle Book’ (2016) and ‘The Lion King’ (2019). In May 8th 2019 Deadline reported that Apple had ordered Prehistoric Planet, a new documentary series by BBC Studios executive produced by Favreau. The official Apple TV+ YouTube channel unveiled the first official sneak peek into the docuseries on April 2nd, 2022 while the second trailer was released on May 19th, 2022 just a few days to when the series will start. Kara Talve, Anže Rozman and Hans Zimmer composed the original score for Prehistoric Planet.
The fifth episode of Prehistoric Planet premiered on May 23rd and one episode had been dropping each day until its final episode that will be aired on May 27th. Every of these five instalments in this documentary series about dinosaurs has several episodes dealing with different species at different locations across continents. The order of premiere titles is Coasts, Deserts, Freshwater, Ice Worlds and Forests. Each of the five episodes has runtimes of roughly between thirty nine and forty two minutes.
