A sizzling, witty dark comedy has been unveiled by the Succession director and executive producer Mark Mylod. On a silver screen, The Menu is a recrimination. Indeed, the movie should be watched by waiters on call for foolish luxurious caprice of the rich guys. The story of The Menu reveals how a bunch of obnoxious and wealthy brats boat ride to an exclusive island in order to have their getaway. They are paying handsomely in order for them to wine and dine with a reputable chef. What they will face is that kind of humility that comes with Michelin stars.

Prim foodie Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) leads beautiful Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) towards moored luxury yacht. Behind them walked a well dressed multitude of people who appeared to be jewelry dealers too.Margot looks away as she is noticed by an old man.The star says “Where’s my paparazzi?”-John Leguizamo turns and asks his assistant Aimee Carrero who happens to be there. He is ecstatic about being recognized by those loud finance bros Arturo Castro, Rob Yang.Gossips from New York tabloids state Lillian Bloom, famous food critic played by Janet McTeer engaged in some small talk with her editor Paul Adelstein using high speech.Elsewhere complications arise when Elsa –the matronly looking maître d’ cannot find Margot’s name on her list.

The Hawthorne appears as a remote place after which they are transported there via yacht.Despite having gone through quick tour round it, the staff helps them settle down.Tyler can’t contain his enthusiasm. The finest example of molecular gastronomy is just moments away.A thunderclap causes all waiters and cooks to snap into attention.Chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) strides into the dining room like who he actually is.

Julian assures his chosen guests that this will be the most memorable dining experience throughout their lives. The menu is exclusively created for them to taste it with their critically trained palates. Looking like laser, Julian’s eyes focus on Margot. What brought her here? Her surprise and hurt are evident. Tyler ignores this, his awe continues unabated. It is a strange start to what will become a haunting meal.

These diners are full of themselves and disgusting.Margot sticks out like a sore thumb. She is not meant to be at Hawthorne. In Julian’s elaborate plan, they messed up one thing but didn’t change his goal at all.Eating at Hawthorne is evidently beyond the reach of common folks. However, there’s more to status other than just the zeroes in your off shore accounts. What another thought about people and foods would you need? All living creatures die for food that we eat.A right attitude towards food should be shown especially when one has enough everything else around him.Julian had been laboriously working for greatness all his life.He has finally made it up there in vain.Cooking for such individuals was Julian’s biggest disappointment; people who have no regard for anything except themselves.

Mylod (Entourage, Shameless) was perfect as always in capturing annoyances by means of satire.Tyler played by Hoult knows everything starting from kitchen utensils and ingredients towards creating a masterpiece dish. But real work involved into making an ordinary meal extraordinary never occurs to him.His interest is purely intellectual exercise meant only to demonstrate superiority among others. This character however, is also shared by some of the guests. So used are they to having whatever they want whenever they please without caring whatsoever for those whose sacrifices mean nothing.

There is a certain element of predictability in the movie. When violence starts, there is nothing shocking. Still, Mylod doesn’t aim at big revelations. He makes a statement on classism that is both social, economical and philosophical. Fine dining for four stars shows the disparities perfectly in this case. The Menu shares similar themes to Ruben Östlund’s award-winning Triangle of Sadness but it’s a little subtler with just as biting funny bits. Here, schadenfreude dashed with fatality had me dying of laughter. I’ll definitely revisit this menu someday.
