Watching a toxic fog envelop the earth, astronauts trapped in the last of humanity’s space research stations. Called Rubikon this is an intense piece of science fiction dealing with deadly human action. And there was no aliens and asteroids to blame for our sudden drop. This falls into place as an act of arrogance and pride by mankind. This film examines some sobering themes: environmental disaster, economic disparity and interpersonal relationships in crisis situations. It is a captivating study of character faced with difficult moral dilemmas that are brought on by worst case scenarios. In its defiance of convention, Rubikon moves in unexpected ways.

The Earth’s atmosphere has become polluted; it takes place in 2056 AD. Governments have been replaced by corporations as ruling entities. The rich people live in domes built with air filters provided by these companies. Only one remains called Rubikon which is also a space station Relying on the stars to give us answers is considered useless.

In Searching for Nibra Corporation sends capsule to Rubikon with Commander Hannah Wagner (Julia Franz Richter) and chemist Gavin Abbott (George Blagden). Their duties include replacing the existing crew and evaluating Dr Dimitri Krylow’s research (Mark Ivanir). His algae filtration system has ensured that the machine air supply continues working well. However docking proves difficult for Wagner because she makes a mistake while navigating through space.

Wagner’s arrival surprises commander Jensen (Nicholas Monu) who follows commands leading his team to leave too. He did not expect Nibra to pay much attention to Rubikon anyway so he never questioned it before now.The returning module seemingly suffers from similar breakdowns before their eyes making them even more alarmed over another rocket explosion occurring.. A cloud engulfs Earth within fractions of a second much faster than lightning moving across heavens at light speed forcing them all to lose any contact with those still down below.. The analysis made by Abbott turns out to be a horrifying one. Are they the last people on earth?

Rubikon takes a slow burn approach to the narrative. All of these characters are strangers. They find themselves together in an impossible survival situation. The soldier is Wagner who is tough as nails and wants something better for her life than what it has become.Abbott, on the other hand, is just a rich kid activist who was simply sent away by his parents.Krylow hates and distrusts Nibra because he understands importance of this algae. These three have to learn how to work together quickly despite their different personalities and agendas. They have got to develop plans for their future.

The survivors take the end of the world differently from each other. How does someone spend his or her last days on earth? The characters begin cooperating with one another as they face certain doom. This part of Rubikon explores the meaning behind community-based activities whereby individuals literally reside next door to each other.. Until new developments frame what actually happened in a way that surprises them all; they come to an agreement about it. As those fragile bonds get tested, so does the plot deepen.Should they become possible saviors or remain as space farers planning their own course back home?

There is aptitude shown by Austrian director/co-writer Magdalena Lauritsch in her feature debut called Rubikon. There is no excess violence in Rubikon as shown by its deliberate pace.Don’t expect any Gravity type theatrics when watching this film.Special effects and production design that are visually stunning create a realistic atmosphere of tension. Thus class divisions also come into play. Moreover, existential conflicts abound among well-written characters producing unexpected results all around.

It achieves its premise convincingly. It strikes a believable balance between rationality and emotionality. The dystopia envisioned here is not purely fantastical.Meaning crossing nurtured means taking responsibility for irrevocable decision.Sooner or later the environment will reach a tipping point without radical change.
