Nope by Jordan Peele is the epitome of mind-blowing; the film is disjointed, nonsensical and confusing. The movie has several jump moments before ending with its WTF finale. In a twisted first act filled bizarre and horrific imagery, the writer/director/producer hits like a freight train. You will be glued until the plot finally unfolds. Then you realize that some of these disturbing details were not meant for any other reason than to make an obviously clear thing less so. Goofy characters who speak outlandish dialogues with dark jokes get old quickly. I left the cinema feeling that M Night Shyamalan’s Signs was poorly imitated in this movie.
Nope plays as in a segmented narrative. Otis Haywood Sr.’s (Keith David) son OJ Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) features after an unrelated shocking beginning scene. They own a horse farm that provides animals for Hollywood productions. Keke Palmer is also starring as Emerald Haywood, OJ’s sister who seems not to care about training horses. This weird event has both OJ and Emerald running their family business.
Adjacent to their farm lies Jupiter’s Claim Wild West park owned by Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun), former child star of a notorious television show.OJ sells horses to Ricky who also wants the Haywood’s land.Ricky would also want to buy his neighbor’s property while making offers for O.J.’s horses.This does not sit well with OJ especially when Emerald starts talking too much during negotiations.
However, odd things are happening at the farm where they live.Horses behave errantly while electrical appliances fail.O.J sees something incredible in sky chasing spooked steed.Emerald thinks they can make good money if they take a picture of it.Their best option is hiring Angel Torres (Brandon Perea), who works at the local electronics store and is a conspiracy theorist. He can help wire the entire farm and set up hidden cameras to record the paranormal events occurring there.Nothing could have prepared them for what they will find.
Nope’s sci-fi/horror blend looks good early on.Peele tantalizes with weirdness.It takes a lot of concentration to understand what is happening.Oddities occur during their investigation by Haywoods and Angel.Nope goes south in the second act when the danger exponentially increases.The characters see an approaching menace but continue acting stupidly, which marks a turning point leading to more fault lines developing in the film.Given that it becomes clear this twist is actually just another joke, this turn highlights rising imperfections within the movie.Logics, self-preservation, and dubious intent merge into one through absurdity.
The climax of this film is disappointing as well. Peele shows his desire for an action-packed confrontation involving everyone. Wide-angle shots take up most of these scenes.Such fast-paced back-and-forth has no effect anticipated. Practical stunts do not match CGI visual effects. The computerized elements spoil any sense of suspense that was created through that scene.This thing that should be huge, bad and scary looks like it isn’t real at all.Too much time passes before something happens here.What could have been ambitious or captivating quickly loses its steam.
The same problem that has challenged Peele’s previous movie in the US is what Nope is suffering from. He has an excellent concept but cannot string along all the details into a coherent narrative. There are so many gaps in the plot. In order to simply shock people, he throws in some insane parts. For one to accept whatever he/she sees without thinking rationally about it, you must be crazy enough with a high affinity toward accepting strange things as they appear in your eyes. It doesn’t cut it, especially when there is a major subplot involving two main characters that does not really have any bearing on the outcome of events. Although Nope may have moments of suspense and dark comedy, it ultimately fails at this matter entirely. Change your expectations accordingly.
