A pilot from the future goes back in time to work with himself that is much younger. The Adam Project is a decent science fiction adventure film with strong cast chemistry and special effects. Ryan Reynolds, whose trademark is his sarcastic delivery, meets a worthy sidekick in the young Walker Scobell. Their sharp banters and solid action scenes compensate for having a broken script. The time travel part of it could fit through logic holes.

2050: fighter pilot Adam Reed (Reynolds) steals a state-of-the-art jet capable of opening quantum wormholes when fired up. He gets hurt during the heist and fails to go back to the desired time period. In 2022, Young Adam (Scobell) is an undersized smart-aleck who gets pounded by bullies every day. His frustrated mom Ellie (Jennifer Garner) begs him to watch what he says. He dismisses her words with one well-placed punch line for good measure. Both are still mourning over the loss of Louis (Mark Ruffalo), Adam’s dad in an accident.

Young Adam hears some noise coming from behind his house in the forest. When he returns to his father’s work shed, he sees future Adam bleeding all over the place on its floor. He was amazed at learning that older self was handsome, muscular and stocked with incredible gadgets Future Adam did not want him know many details about this trip that has brought him there since it would ruin everything if he just told him what was happening but wanted him instead to play along and pretend as if nothing had ever happened., They were supposed to be aiming for 2018 but hit their mark in 2022 instead! Future Adam needs healing and repairing of the jet before making another jump into space-time While they are hiding out; Maya Sorian(a future industrialist played by Catherine Keener) will catch up on them soon enough because those armored goons she sends to kill them are already here.

First, let’s talk about what works. The runt who gets his ass kicked is played by Scobell and he is hilarious. Poor kid, has to get beaten up repeatedly by some punks. It’s the dream come true that he grows taller and beefs up. Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, is funny for different reasons. He despised his childhood weakness because getting bullied was just part of many issues he had. Future Adam is mad at himself for treating his mother so bad; as well as holding a grudge against his father for loving his job more than him. That family reunion thing has got all feels in it! The ensemble cast succeeds in being humorous and heartfelt.

Nonetheless, future Adam’s quantum escapades are vital but the script fails to make sense with its use of such technology. Characters start popping up like time travel whack-a-moles. They have no reason whatsoever why they would all end up in Young Adam’s place though this happens in the most illogical way possible possible They could go back anywhere before or after 2022 to stop Adams if necessary because at any given moment those bad guys could literally do it.” “This is just a device through which we can see them kicked around,” I said out loud while watching the movie You probably spend days arguing about paradoxes caused by unintended changes in timeline! If you think this way about plot mechanics then you missed one thing: The Adam Project doesn’t give a shit about how “the whole thing” works.

The action sequences borrow heavily from other famous sci-fi franchises like Star Wars and Independence Day. Future Adam fights with an extendable baton that might as well be a lightsaber. It must have passed all copyright infringements checks. The dogfights reminded me of those from Independence Day (1996). Catherine Keener’s villain has henchmen with invisibility cloaking armor while their attack strategies are like those of Jem’Hadar soldiers in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It’s all very beautifully executed but not original at all.

Adam project is ripe for dissection. Film falls short of scrutiny but a great cast helps. Walker Scobell does well against an array of funny actors. To all those who have a thing for science fiction movies, I will just say it as it is. Any kind of a fantastic lightsaber duel is worth watching.
