Judd Hirsch takes on a full shtick in a saccharine though mawkishly sentimental homage to heritage and family. iMordecai introduces an elderly Jewish ex-plumber/painter to the modern world, when his son buys him an iPhone. The digital embrace that brings him back to life and also reminds him of being a Holocaust refugee is quite moving. Several labored subplots are added by iMordecai, which detract from the narrative.

He’s caused by frustration to travel down to his parents’ Florida condo in Miami Beach (Sean Astin). Mordechai cannot hear his own son. A jackhammer is being used to remove the bathroom tiles while he speaks through a very old flip phone that has been patched up with aluminium foil. Marvin Samel forces Fela (Carol Kane), his mother and Mordecai out of their house and into town.

Yet he won’t even look at the iPhone, but is extremely impressed with what is said about it in the store. How to create art using apps is what Nina (Azia Dinea Hale) teaches during one class period. His father buys him iPhone sometimes after having argued over Marvin’s ugly cigar business; which Mordechai says he mortgaged their apartment building located on a beachfront for its survival. According to Marvin, this means that his dad is “a jinx” since he has recently become a dad himself involving Stephanie J Block as his wife who frets over bills piling up because they have newborn twins.

The idiot returns to the store for assistance (75). She offers lessons for free via her volunteer role at Jewish Community Center when she learns from Nina that she could teach her how it works most effectively. This greatly distresses Fela who had started developing feelings towards her too until then they became friends instead of sisters-in-law as was supposed ideally by Marvin Samel . She has misinterpreted Mordechai’s conversation with Siri. As Mordechai listens to rock and surfs the net wearing his Beats headphones, he shares a bit of his boyhood in Poland with Nina. Whereas he fled to Russia during that time, his family was sent to death camps. Nina doesn’t dare tell Mordechai her secret! Fela is too busy worrying about Mordechai and is unable to see what Marvin is facing.

Marvin Samel co-directs/writes a screenplay inspired by his own family story. An animation telling the tale of World War II is used by him. It’s an artistic pause as well as a tool for addressing the gloominess of Mordechai’s young years. After some initial success, however it becomes less effective as the movie goes on..The colorful antics of Mordecai interspersed with cartoonish grief do not have.the same desired effect. Hirsch’s textured acting abilities are on full display here (112). The film loses its dramatic punch since its only voice-over narration rather than physical emotions . I suppose this was Samel’s way of providing comic relief at least from all the sorrow that pervades throughout “iMordecai.” This would have killed Hirsch after being nominated for an Oscar for his performance in The Fabelmans.

Too much happens with secondary characters (144). Marvin spends too much time on business matters (153). The father going through everything for his son makes things heavier (170). On the other hand, Nina ruins iMordecai because she’s totally unrealistic as a character (151). Her past life details are very farfetched and she had no reason to be helping Mordy either(175). Instead, her involvement should be whittled down ny Samels to nothing more than tutoring him on iPhone usage alone; but let us also look at how Mordechai will reconnect with them besides remembering Holocaust in between(157). This approach is too broad (146). The film’s intentions are in good order, but it does go overboard in trying to tick every box.
