Lame, B-Movie Actor Emile Hirsch puts himself into early Razzie’s contention as a cold-blooded killer with a laughable Southern drawl. Dig is a lean thriller about a troubled father and daughter forced on a desert excavation by a murderous couple. The premise isn’t terrible, but the film drags out a paper-thin plot like taffy. The characters behave foolishly in what should be a tense life or death scenario. The plot inexplicably meanders with no actual digging done until the second act. Dig had promise after a gripping open then devolves into brainless banter and bloody violence.
Scott Brennan (Thomas Jane) storms into the local bar of Las Cruces, New Mexico which is set in an arid area. Looking for his wayward daughter, Scott Brennan rushes into one of the local bars of Las Cruces, New Mexico-which is situated in a dry climate region. Jane does not say much since her mother died. Jane has kept quiet since then following her mother’s death. He signs awkwardly at Jane fumbling to communicate with her about the fishing trip she hopes will heal their relationship that he plans to take with her this weekend. When Victor walks into Scott’s machinery rental business, things change.
Victor needs an excavation done asap at a property in the desert valley desert where he throws down wads of cash to cancel Scott’s daddy-daughter time.Victor wants an immediate excavation carried out at his desert valley property so he throws money around canceling Scott’s father-daughter time.Victor wants an immediate house dig carried out on his property so he offers some cash to scott to cancel his having chance with his daughter.Saving both carbon steel pipes from being thrown away was allowed.Scott says don’t touch any walls just underneath it they can dig if they want.He takes along Pablo(his assistant)and reluctant Jane to the work site.Scott convinces himself that Jane won’t do what she should. They find money hidden in the walls. Victor and his psychotic girlfriend, Lola (Liana Liberato), show up. They take everyone hostage and force them to work. Their captors have a buried secret that puts the Brennans and Pablo in mortal danger.
A reasonable person would have been suspicious of Victor’s deal. It is as though this dude has just declared “Hey, I am the bad guy!” What boggles my mind about Victor’s plan is why he would even bother? Yes, Victor needed to kill Scott after he found out all their secrets. That definitely makes him look like an idiot because when renting the equipment it’s hard not to look suspicious as the owner of it.The police wouldn’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure that out.
The opening scene sets the stage for believable conflict. Jane blames Scott for her mother’s death and hearing impairment. Scott was guilt-ridden by his hasty actions and bad consequences thereafter.Rather than waste time on such a pointless hostage scenario, there could have been room to explore a profound schism between them.Under duress, they make peace with one another but not this way.
Emile Hirsch is a capable actor. He’s been good in several films. Dig may be his worst performance. His accent, mannerisms, and ensemble interactions are overblown.I laughed when he showed up at the house masked. Victor spoke to Scott hours before and made no effort to change his twangy voice. Asher Levin: A Former B-movie producer turned director wants K.Natural Born Killers along with victor-Lola doesn’t at all. Dig is ludicrous about everything just like its central character Victor.
