There has never been a more adventurous path to “I do” or one so full of murder. That is the clever twist that makes Broad City, Difficult People, Younger, and Search Party’s Wedding Season stand out in Hulu’s new ambitious rom-com outing. The makers of this show have called it a “genre-busting” series with good reason. Except right now there are too many shows that aim at being genre-busting that maybe the smartest way to break any ground is to go back to originality.

But here we have Katie and Stefan (Rosa Salazar and Gavin Drea) as star-crossed lovers who through various mishaps come across as derived from, consciously or not, such shows like Netflix’ The End of F***ing World and Afterparty on AppleTV+(and films like Bonnie and Clyde –and partly 2022’s The Lost City). They meet when they fall in love at a wedding since its wedding season after all then immediately begin an affair. Unfortunately for Katie, she has already got an engaged buzzkill. And thus it flashes forward two months later and you will find Katie getting married today only her brand-new husband together with his entire family murdered throughout their fun day which was ruined by death. Stefan seems guilty to law enforcement while he thinks that katie is also responsible for murders in his mind where\the truth lies Join us on this journey.

Wedding Season is one of those new shows worth following. It is witty, intelligent and still manages to maintain its intrigue especially during the first half of the season .Salazar and Drea keep up this mad energy flowing in their on-screen shenanigans.Their coupling—then uncoupling—seems very cat-and-mouse; Salazar becomes a suspect trickster whilst Drea tries to catch her up.

At times it feels so Streisand/O’Neal-like What’s Up Doc?

Stefan (Drea) is a young good-looking doctor with trust issues. Deep down, he has an insatiable desire for love that we are told drawn from his early life in foster homes although this is inadequately developed. He has a great crew of friends who all seem to be attending so many weddings together. It’s such a summer time. On the other hand, Katie appears to have everything going right – she’s confident and intelligent. What else could go wrong?

As the show alternates between past and present, giving us some background into how Katie and Stefan first got close, it is obvious that they belong together at the end of the day. Soon after Katie had her wedding day ruined by poisoning groom plus eight family members; things take off from here. The police (Jamie Richie and Jade Harrison) question Stefan briefly before he’s forcibly taken away by Katie in secretively.Nice girl! She runs out with him across UK on an impulse — something he doesn’t like doing often—stating she’ll only tell him once they’re on board if ever they get caught.Could katie be suspecting? Maybe not yet as both must continue running.

Within about the first six episodes, the writers of this show just keep on their toes with creativity. One day, however, all the couple’s adventures lead them to United States of America where they have to prove their innocence. The police are thus, after solving it, and Katie has frequently been implying that Stefan’s family was not an upright one. Would Stefan believe her?

Many subplots are there. Harrison and Richie do deliver some good laughs within their cop partnership at Mettigan donoughs initially but then promptly.

There is also Suji (Ioanna Kimbrook), who is always hungry for love but ends up dining in empty buffets. And Anil (Bhav Joshi) and Leila (Callie Cooke) become husband and wife. Their extravagant wedding is supposed to be the summer season’s big statement piece and one more thing to tie into a knot by the end of this show though it could be anticipated as such from all those displays of tomfoolery observed when Katie gets involved with Stefan by time the final credits roll?

It is hoped that Wedding Season will do better than its well meaning intentions even though it seems too front-loaded and its second half somewhat lacks coherent inertia. Other shows experienced this as well particularly in last seasons of Killing Eve where they usually caught us off guard at a season end – I guess so anyway! Things recover fully from my own personal view when we reach here finally; many things need to be put in place for that.

Wedding Season is Salazar’s show through-and-through. Drea makes an adorable Stefan, but Katie played by Salazar steals the limelight such that whenever she appears on screen every viewer yearns for her next word or action? This may not come as much surprise considering what she has done before in The Undone episode of Brand New Cherry Flavor as evidenced by her bold acting style. Even if she receives it from her character, the actress always groundsthe madness that any script throws at her. In other words, her Katie is a fascinating and ambiguous character for viewers and even Stefan. Is she dangerous? Can you trust her? Is she an insider working secretly on something or just crazy? But regardless, I’m having fun watching Salazar.

Drea did well with his part but I felt as if there was little thing about his character. Moreover, how many moments of over-acting can an actor be allowed by a writer and Drea – who does an admirable job – manages to do it without getting overly involved; ironically, some might argue that this makes them more inclined towards rooting for Katie than Stefan. Now we’re talking about breaking genre here. Of course, this has nothing to do with Drea. He’s handsome and pitch-perfect: in short he’s a good leading man. There was so much potential to develop his character.

The rest of the cast were also quite satisfactory. They matched the material written for them by authors in total. As an assembly they create a sense of wonder about weddings as well as introspection into people going all out to make their unions stronger than before. Though such social commentary could have been better done here, what is provided here does suffice in most cases where weddings tend to become excessive manifestations since we all know that they are extremely ostentatious in real life anyway right?

Meanwhile, Wedding Season is a treasure trove of ridiculousness. The last few episodes have me scratching my head because I still don’t know what’s happening. The authors had to find ways to get out of this tight spot caused by the introduction of the investigation. It doesn’t ruin the show as a whole but many fans nowadays treat their series just as they do relationships; they either invest or not in it at all. Until cancellation or series finale breaks them apart. They also seek perfect combinations. Hence, Wedding Season will eventually come up with one, no matter how long it takes.
