The seemingly timid and unimportant English tailor fell into the hands of gangsters. Mark Rylance, the Oscar winner, demonstrates a master class in deceitful behavior that is subtle. A needle was threaded by him in a dangerous place where lives can be snuffed out easily. The Outfit is a crime drama with razor sharp drama and many twists. It goes over the top though in its climax while also packing an adrenaline fueled gut punch.
Leonard Burling (Rylance) owns an exclusive tailor store with interesting customers located at Chicago 1956.He enjoys working meticulously with pride to make suits that are perfect. Leonard pays no attention to suspicious people who put envelopes into his drop box as he walks by it locked. He only has one friend who is Mabel (Zoey Deutch),a trusted assistant whose dream is travelling worldwide away from her dreary life.Leonard’s box is picked up by Richie Boyle (Dylan O’Brien), the arrogant son of Irish mob boss Roy Boyle (Simon Russell Beale).Francis, a scarred assassin with a vicious nature always accompany Richie(Johnny Flynn).
A panicking Richie and Francis have to visit Leonard’s shop on this fateful night as well. They are being pursued by cops and other rival gangsters who want them dead for good. The Booyles, whom they aspire to join when they grow up into the Outfit which is national crime syndicate gave them crucial information.Someone is spying for the Boyles.Richie and Francis have evidence of who that person is- hidden in their briefcase. They want their trusted cutter to hold it for them. This however becomes very dangerous when every cop or criminal wants that briefcase checked.
Graham Moore, writer of The Imitation Game does not disappoint in his first film directing project. In this film The outfit everything happens inside Leonard’s shop.He should cleverly arrange things so that deadly visitors do not bump into each other or come across the briefcase.Moore places constant tension through his staging, editing choices and an excellent performance by Mark Rylance. You don’t have any idea who is speaking the truth or what their purpose for doing so.The movie does not feel that it is in a theatre play. Each time Leonard thinks of a plan to save himself something happens either out of the shop.
The Outfit does a great job of introducing characters. And then making you wonder if we even know anything at all. The search for the briefcase reveals different motives. There are much blurred lines between friends and enemies. Moore’s script (co-written with Johnathan McClain) does not stay on course.Another plot twist opens up within the second act.
A lot of screen time in The Outfit is focused on Leonard’s expertise and his fastidiousness. His character believes he is “cutter” than just an ordinary tailor who sews buttons all day. Like fine garments, Graham Moore has Leonard compare his present difficult position to creating fashion wear.He must appease some customers, even when they make foolish decisions. This explanation is also figurative concerning Leonard’s mind.Leonard’s suits are appreciated but no one fears him or views him as an adversary. In cutting fabric there is more than meets the eye.
At some point every good film ends logically and satisfactorily. But movie makers drag on wanting more. The finale of The Outfit puts salt on a seasoned stew. The last five minutes should go away.Even though h would trim it himself, for sure.
