A blind boy in the deep forest alone with only a rope to get him home safely. Tethered is an indie horror-thriller flick that starts off in an exciting and clever way. The dark setting, scary music and creeping evil all combine to provide a great opening act. However, this film looses steam as time goes on and new character introduced. Ultimately, the mystery that has been built up turns out to have very few surprises. In addition, Tethered becomes one of those films that gets caught up in clichés from tired genres.

A blind boy called Solomon (Brody Bett) is taught survival by his mother called Mother (Alexandra Paul) in a remote forest of North Carolina. They are stocked with supplies and food at their isolated cottage. Whenever they go outside, Solomon’s mother puts a rope around his waist. She hangs cans in trees so as he knows where their animal traps are when he returns home at nightfall each day for dinner. They have a milking goat and a small garden. Three rules his mom tells him never to break no matter what includes never going outside without rope.

Mother vanishes without any trace or explanation whatsoever. He sadly listens to tapes of her voice everyday after she leaves him alone there forever Young Solomon (Jared Laufree) lives on into old age “When do you think I can leave? What happens if it breaks?” The first thing that popped into my mind was how would it be if the rope got stuck or torn apart accidentally? How is it possible to traipse hundreds of feet through thick underbrush while being tied onto something?

Solomon proves well drawn as a blind individual although participation changes almost nothing about the wild lifestyle he leads every day It seems rather unlikely though Doesn’t it seem impossible walking hundreds of feet into dense screenwood while tethered to some pole? Co-writer/director Daniel Robinette does make sure however that the central story line remains as credible as possible. Solomon’s ways of thinking about trapping, fishing, and chopping wood are ingenious. If just the same attention has been paid to crafting the movie’s conclusion.

Tethered is an expansion of a short film by Daniel Robinette. He needs more than just the rope for his feature version. For example, Mother has obviously forsaken her son for some reason that we know not yet. Her three rules can be seen quite easily through Act III as they are almost identical with what actually happens in this play at last Hank is dumb like any other stupid character in horror films who lacks common sense In darkness it would be absurd to run into unknown dangers towards which one does not know anything because it is pitch black night No person with an ounce of self-preservation would do something so foolish and horror movies are filled with such stupidity.

This film could have been made much scarier. The time jump from young Solomon to old Solomon misses a huge opportunity for terror. Imagine being a blind little boy left alone in your creepy cabin after your mom vanishes! With threatening noises everywhere you have to scavenge and hunt for food The psychological impact on a child living in such isolation would be terrifying An opportunity for real thrills goes begging at this point in the movie.
