Not Okay is a mauling satire on narcissism, social media influencers and corrosive consequence of fame on the internet. The title uses an entitled millennial’s desperate need for attention and of course, her crush with a boy to mock stereotypes as well as society that behaves like lemmings. There is nothing intelligent or insightful about any of this. It is highly offensive how Not Okay tries to be deep but ends up being shallow in its ugly portrayals. The use of terrorist attacks or school shootings to make one’s point in this film is just wrong.

Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch) cries looking at her computer screen. Her social media accounts are overflowing with hateful comments made by others. She has been called “the worst person in the world.” Danni struggles with being nobody two months ago. A photo editor at Depravity, she wants to hang out with the cool queer kids. Danni lusts after a bleached-blonde marijuana-vaping influencer workmate Colin (Dylan O’Brien) who goes by “WeedBoiiColin” on his social media profile page. Danni pens an essay called “Why Am I so Sad?” which mocks her by her editor although she wishes to become an online writer at Depravity.

Danni decides that she will pretend to go on a Parisian writers retreat like those taken by her hipster colleagues. She cuts herself out and pastes into beautiful French scenery then posts social media stories about it being wonderful trip as well. With this aim, she even buys tickets in order to prove that she was indeed going somewhere else and not faking it all along. The terrorists’ bombing of Parisian landmarks brings an interesting twist into her deceit.

Afterwards, Dannie’s follower count skyrockets immediately following the bombing attack. Her parents (Embeth Davidtz, Brennan Brown) are calling every other second asking if she is okay. Dannie stages her return home to fanfare. As a result, she is glorified as a victim of trauma. Every single person who did not care about her before wants to be friends now.Colin cannot wait to go out with her. Attending support groups are some of the ways that Danni uses to increase lying stakes in this situation. In fact, she even befriends Rowan (Mia Isaac), a teenager who survived a school shooting and became an influencer on gun control, just to gain more followers.Danni acquires fame, but everyone at work does not believe her.

Twitter, TikTok or any popular chatting app is filled with senseless chatter and filthy bile. Like it or not, this is the modern public square where information gets disseminated. Not Okay could have been incisive without making real tragedies seem like something else entirely through sexualizing them in such tacky ways. There are dreams that suggest terrorist bombings which keep growing in Danni’s guilt.Roan’s torment and emotional devastation from an awful event turns into lesson learned for others.Danielle being canceled by society was well deserved and there were moments where “cancel culture” seemed justified because it was so arrogant.Seriously what else would happen to someone who has faked everything? Because then you would understand why every bit of this whole thing is shit.

All these supporting characters are pathetic parodies of famous issues.“Weed boii Colin” as though he got lost during the Parkland massacre David Hogg and a hidden lesbian writer played by Nadia Alexander are all just props for dark comedy.Notably, these types can be satirized without being funny. The film then swings back to seriousness when the unlikable protagonist tries to make things right again.Quinn Shephard (Blame) overstates the obvious in an offensive manner.

There isn’t any deep understanding of social media problems here. Infamy seekers will do anything for spectacle. What happened in this movie is the norm of our today’s hashtag-driven, egotistical world: fake weekend getaways and terrorist attacks’ survivors.I had to go and take a shower after watching it.
