Last Sentinel is based on a catastrophic rise in sea levels in the future. There are two continents on either side of the world fighting over scarse resources. Four soldiers from the South defend an outpost placed in the middle of an endless ocean. The first watch for any impending attack in a war that has gone cold for forty years. The film examines climate change, human destruction and paranoid xenophobia through the passionate, surviving desolate characters: a man unable to escape his past sins.

The movie gets credit for producing a gloomy atmosphere but loses its excitement at some point. The mystery that drives the narrative lingers for too long into a banal finale

In 2063, Sergeant Heindrichs (Thomas Kretschmann) watches as stormy weather prevents the Sentinel crew from hauling fish out of their nets. An alert blares that a massive tidal wave is approaching. Corporal Cassidy (Kate Bosworth), second-in-command, tries to help Sullivan (Lucien Laviscount), Baines (Martin McCann) and other crew reel in net full of precious fresh food while they still can,

Sarge kept them on strict schedules even when they were demoralized like this. They have work to do dammit! Sullivan looks at the radio checking if there would be anything new from command’s end. As usual there was no response… They have been at Sentinel for two years now; replacements should have come several months ago! Our engineer says all systems are failing apart …..they fear that we all might be affected by radiation hence move us into iodine baths…..this is nothing but a final act of defense before twenty-megaton nuclear weapon.

There is something showing on radar screen though it might be just some small glitch .A ‘blip’ appears on screen indicating an approaching boat near sentinel .Baines and Sullivan cheer loudly because this could mean finally getting away Sarge calls to arms when the vessel doesn’t respond to radio contact. The enemy could be on board. Firing orders are given but Cassidy urges restraint on Sullivan. Now take a dingy and investigate

Last Sentinel throws its characters into the great unknown. They have been alone for years, and their supposed adversary is always just about to strike them hard. Soldiers must stand alert to protect the motherland while there has not been an actual encounter in decades. Is the enemy a mere figment of our imagination? Do they move as if there was some illusionary threat? Last Sentinel shows how desperate Baines and Sullivan feel towards the boat . Sarge insists that he wouldn’t leave his post behind despite everything so as to maintain discipline amongst his soldiers.

During the first act, Estonian director Tanel Toom (Truth and Justice) introduces an atmosphere of believable tension. The fault lines between these characters are drawn by storm itself and its aftermath.. Worst case scenario is symbolized by presence of bomb. The early intrigue is lost as lengthy machinations over boat happen. This is where different personalities converge which everyone can see clearly There was time that movie had to grab it with both hands and run, instead it resorts for melodrama characterized by a not-so-secret affair… This subplot wanders around when all actions should have been geared up.

Last Sentinel grows even more absurd in its climax. It makes absolutely no sense at all from any rational point of view whatsoever! Every single thing that happens in this film can happen at any point during it. A weak ending kills off what would otherwise be considered a tolerable thriller.
