A hitman of Dominican origin who was on the run for several years is eventually tracked down by dangerous enemies. La Soga Salvation continues the story of Luisito (Manny Perez), who was known as ‘La Soga’ or The Rope and used to deal with criminals and drug dealers. In this sequel, Luisito becomes a pawn in a federal agent’s conspiracy while another more perilous enemy remains unseen. With La Soga Salvation, one gets an action-packed film with action surprises both genuine and unexpected that left me amazed. It is a movie about dark humor, tragic consequences, and corruption in DR society.
The story resumes in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Luisito has found his personal happiness living with his girlfriend Lia (Sarah Jorge León). He is working as a butcher at the local shop while she has enlisted as a nurse assistant. This life of fugitives seemed to be over now. The couple were happy together but wanted children soon. That changes when Agent James McCann (Chris McGarry) shows up with information concerning a case they would like him to help them close.
Luisito looks directly into Lia’s eyes and tells her they have to go right away; he runs to pick up his final pay check from work where he first finds out how bad things are at home for them; McCann’s goons have taken Lia hostage –he will kill her if Luisito does not comply with his demands. In order to save his love, Luisito says he’ll do anything at all for her man until it turns out that there’s other mysterious killer assassin named Hada Vanessa playing this game who has their lives in jeopardy.
This la soga salvation comes fast and brutal violence against it’s enemies. Other than characters shooting each other up using all sorts of fancy gunplay techniques , these people simply get shot dead. If you knock someone on the head once they become unconscious . His killing is not just a machine that cannot be hurt and will not feel pain . The movie grounds its action in harsh reality. That ups the ante even more. Luisito must live to save Lia. He is shocked by guilt. Memories of killing for decades haunt him. Manny Perez, who also writes and directs, is conflicted throughout.
La Soga Salvation is an unconventional and predictable film. There are several plot twists that keep changing the direction of the story time again and again without any notice. One in particular was a shocker! Manny Perez plays his cards close to the chest for good reason . The machinations of Colombian actress Hada Vanessa almost make her character steal the show . It’s always good to see an action film with high body count having intricate serious plots in such.
There were a few scenes which threw me off when watching them . Luisito has dreams about his youth that bother him at night . He also has dream flash-backs about things that happened in film one . This does not come out until the third act where one supporting character gives key exposition . LaSoga was released in 2009.Most don’t know or haven’t seen part one.Perez might have made flashbacks clearer. Not until it is literally spelled out do they seem like anything significant.
La Soga Salvation belongs to a very worthy sicario genre entry. The film is filled with bloody violence, betrayal, and revenge; but there’s actually a pretty good plot with depth and some emotional weight too.I loved the way Manny Perez had portrayed Luisito as a multi-layered person. It definitely left me wanting another sequel
