Fresh is incredibly twisted and the most disturbing film I have seen in a while. A tired young woman from online dating strikes up conversation with a handsome man at the supermarket. Whirlwind romance follows and leads to a weekend getaway with an awful result. Fresh had me rolling around on the floor laughing, and then gasping in absolute horror of it all. It is extremely macabre stuff which this movie deals with. Do not eat before watching Fresh.
Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a delightful and good-natured girl who has been unlucky in love so far. Every guy she meets through her laptop or offline is a jerk. This chance meeting seems too good to be true as she shops locally. Steve (Sebastian Stan) is a handsome charismatic doctor who can make you laugh easily Noa falls into his arms gladly enough. Her best friend Millie (Jonica T. Gibbs) does not trust him at all though Steve doesn’t have any social media profiles whatsoever which Noa finds cool hence when Steve suggests that they spend their weekend away together she happily agrees.
Noa feels uncomfortable around Steve’s refined taste. She cannot get phone signal, also his Wi-Fi network is down as well He ignores every red flag about his personality traits They just really wanted to get away from everything for awhile Noa wakes up after sipping one cocktail provided by Steve herself The gravity of what i happening starts hitting her hard She begs Steve not to rape her As for Steve, he calmly says that he won’t touch her sexually Then he says that him and his clients would love to have her over for dinner.
Fresh turns from romantic comedy to disgusting cannibalism instantly Director Mimi Cave makes her feature debut using an American Psycho approach to Noa’s plight Sebastian Stan sings and dances along with some 80s music while working in the kitchen Joyfully slicing delectable cuts of tasty flesh There are moments of dark comedy in these scenes It’s hard not to laugh at his measured approach.
Noa’s captivity is full of unexpected events Daisy Edgar-Jones undergoes an emotional roller coaster ride. What had started as a happy relationship turns into smart survival. Noa has to use everything she has against Steve, it is her only option The second act of Fresh is shocking on several levels Psychological subterfuge returns them to that love affair and slaughter These are extraordinary scenes They are disgusting but you can’t look away from the screen.
Mimi Cave and Lauryn Kahn take aim at modern dating practices Noa would never get into a car with a stranger However, loneliness and frustration from digital interactions make her easy prey She let herself be lured in because Steve seemed like such a nice guy She never suspected he was too good to be true Noa curses herself for being so stupid This mistake often results in the death of the woman Not vetting a partner could make you the main course.
Fresh devolves into horror genre stereotypes in its final act I have major problem with how this ended The characters behave unrealistically during what is clearly a fight or flight moment That’s disappointing, because until that point Fresh has been so fresh and clever but ultimately it’s an amazing experience You know vegans will increase their numbers after this one Do not watch Fresh if you have weak nerves.
