What is going to happen with Emily? Definitely there will be nothing unique and original. Without a doubt, we are discussing the new season of Emily in Paris. The popular Darren Star (Melrose Place, Sex and the City) series just put out the first half of Season 4 — Part 2 drops September 12 — and it’s just the same old thing for our dear Emily. That isn’t all negative though. Who doesn’t enjoy watching multiple episodes on one night that are like eating ice cream straight from a tub? Why Netflix decided to split this outing into two is strange because it lacks any cliffhangers. They might have known that too much “Emily in Paris” could become meaningless after some time.
Season 4 amplifies Emily’s “new” adventures so she indirectly does them for us again. Necessarily, none of these “new” experiences or characters are as exciting as they can make us demand more. This should have been alarming for a show which was streamed by an alleged 58 million households last year alone. However what we do get is still warm and snuggle-upable – not forgetting stylish either. And yet, here again, the show misses on one level even when attempting to turn itself at times towards drama over comedy.
The show’s original concept simply involved employing a Midwestern girl by one marketing company in Paris so that her unmistakably American perspective could stand out brightly among others. That’s where many regular watchers began raising their eyebrows anyway at this point already.Seemed incredible that French people who are chic and smart would need someone else from America to give his opinion about something to them? Well, some did fall for it and millions more viewers either forgave or ignored the plot strand because… well, Paris! Also Lily Collins played Emily wonderfully.
Speed through or space out the first few episodes because things pick up as you go along. The aftermath between boyfriend Alfie and Emily after Season 3’s wedding debacle with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Camille (Camille Razat) sees Emily juggling a number of balls. Of course, she flirts with Gabriel, but then there is Camille who is carrying the guy’s baby and has chosen to keep it. It is written like that deliberately because the character doesn’t appear in earlier scenes.
Still other times, Emily is emotionally fraught when Grateau makes her and Alfie (heartthrob Lucien Laviscount) its new fresh faces for their marketing client. The plot thickens…or not so much. How nice it must be to discover Emily on billboards across Paris next to Alfie. In addition, Ashley Park is back as Mindy and once again she entertains us all; her story arc at the Eurovision Song Contest adds some zing with its deceptively simple hurdles. At this point however, it feels like they threw together something just to make up the numbers for the season’s storyline. However, that does not end there though!
In Emily in Paris, such clichéd plotlines still prevail. Emily is sticking her nose into other people’s business causing trouble. The way Emily dresses is so amazing. She flirts with a smile on her face. Maybe she fixes something or maybe she doesn’t. It keeps going like this. Certain threads are starting to sound monotonous. Nonetheless, Bruno Gouery always amuses as Luc and it’s pure delight whenever he enters the scene. Keep that energy coming. We want more of what Luc has to say; there’s a bit where he reacts to Emily’s TikTok video that is so funny. Look for Jeremy O Harris’ Grégory Elliot Duprée too.
If not, reframe your perspective on how much the series will excite you from episode 1. You’ll be engaged after watching some episodes (because you’ve gone as far). However, seems like there are just too many storylines which nobody would even notice if they were left out at all. One of them includes Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), who gets approached by a journalist about “unorthodox” work relationships she might have had with the boss and now being reported on by said reporter who wants her side of things written down for posterity or whatever else they call it these days.Sylvie goes through a number of motions before settling on an answer that does not reflect her strength as an independent woman.
However, there’s something about how this show handles its bohemian nature alongside some stern subjects including rampant sexism in French society or grappling with death which feels very off-balance here – almost sinking the entire thing overall.A lot gets lost in translation when it comes down this show though because while those sound like great ideas at least they could still be done wrong by someone else.Still, we’re tempted to lean into what’s presented because it does finally offer more than a hint of something different.
This season is going to live up to your fashion eye candy expectations. There’s a subtle change in Emily’s look too. Even mature maybe? Marylin Fitoussi, Emmy-nominated costume designer, still has some killer ideas left. Emily in Paris Season 4 manages to overcome this issue by maintaining the good balance between comedy and drama, and by keeping its originality throughout the season. But if the second half isn’t better and more surprising, we may have to bail.
