So, an enigmatic psychiatrist is approached by a man haunted by a reoccurring dream he has been having. Chariot is just a futile and crazy look into the afterlife. It starts as an interesting ontological puzzle but ends up with nonsensical gimmicks on stage. The film hangs around its subject matter like some sort of lurking predator. Then transforms into being harmless when the innocent protagonist discovers shocking truth revealed in it. Chariot’s few moments of black comedy are not enough to make up for its grossly underwhelming ending that left me perplexed and irritated.

Thomas Mann stars as Harrison Hardy in this movie. Every single night since he was conceived, he has had the same boring dream that haunts him even now. Harry sees his mother in the kitchen. She asks him whether his father bought garlic at the store. He walks through to the living room. Then notices red string sticking out of an attic which never existed within those walls before. This is a dream that Harry has had thousands of times before visiting Dr.Karn; an eccentric psychiatrist who claims to have an answer through hypnosis.

Harry moves into a new building while seeing the doctor at first time. The Lafayette is nothing like any other place that Harry knows or experienced before.A woman named Maria (Rosa Salazar) introduces herself in the laundry room. She invites him over immediately.Harry finds her directness slightly disconcerting. But they like each other so much they cannot help it.Maria shows him all these weirdos.Meanwhile, Dr.Karn thinks Harry’s fast lover with low regard. He uses another method though. To this “reincarnation specialist,” however, Harry represents a very special case.

Chariot consists of multiple chapters: one from 1800s”.This is our first hint that we’re dealing with some kind of after-death story.Harry’s beginning seems unrelated than any other part of his introduction.Always in the black and white cut scenes, his boring dream is shown. We get more fragments here and there until we find our way.Harry’s life around the Lafayette is filled with odd occurrences. One of them involves an attractive redhead named Lauren (Scout Taylor-Compton).Lauren has a split personality called Oliver who is a nasty older British guy.Lauren flips between Oliver and her real self like flipping switches.A character in which was instrumental to the third act that made no sense like everything else.

Thomas Mann works as the straight man surrounded by unexplained lunacy. There is a character who just floats for instance but Harry barely mentions him.Harry lives with that realization. He can’t sleep well or properly wake up.The thing that makes Harry fascinating is his love for living. His time at Lafayette, loving Maria, wanting some kind of meaningful life. Thus, it’s unsurprising that one of the most pivotal moments of the film deals with Harry questioning what death means.Adam Sigal (Sargasso) seems to lose track among irrelevant parts of this story line.Harry should have had a deeper understanding about his dreams.

Chariot ends on an absolutely confusing note. In mere seconds John Malkovich becomes some silly buffoon clown from a bad theoretical circus. That solution he gave to Harry about “glitch” could have been done during their first session, thus sparing us from meaningless wandering throughout ninety minutes.
