It’s been nine long years of dry spell for the American Pie franchise, that is until the franchise was resurrected for one last hurrah in theaters. Jim, Stifler, Kevin, Finch and Oz for most part were the character that shaped the way Millennials are for some years. For most people who watched the first one in 1999, these movies reinvented the raunchy comedy genre, while this particular movie of theirs would inspire many more. Undoubtedly, Jacob has found the idea of an American reunion long overdue. Well, except that it was only ever made a “sequel” in name alone, and branded straight to DVD for all intents and purposes sequeled Naked Mile and Beta House. The same is being in fact asked with the beneficial and promising since American Wedding.
Taking place almost a decade after American Wedding, the boys resolve to come to East Great falls for a high school reunion. As expected, life has changed in several ways in the years gone by. For Jim, Finch, Kevin and Oz, growing up is just a way of life things people do now and then – but with Stifmeister, patience is more like a virtue. As the seasons change, the gang learns that living in and out of the past becomes harder than anyone can imagine. And as it would appear, it was fun and games.
It is important to note that too, as you prepare to see American Reunion, that there is some quite limited target market which is focused. For those who had these films as their childhood, yes: a lot of nostalgia revolving around the bonds of friendship, ’90s references galore, secret sexy shenanigans, and enough Good Charlotte with the rest, among others. For noobs though, …on Reunion’s stand up, even the onslaught of poop and dick jokes may not be quite as appealing. And frankly, the franchise has been very irritating and that Hamor has aged in a not-so-good-appeal sense. No, no, it’s not that their jokes have been getting worse seams to be constricted but simply because they have remained stagnant. The film is really ageing and in that sorry it is even respectable for certain reasons. At the very least, it knows how to be clear about its position, for better or for worse.
Where Reunion is stronger however, much stronger, is, interestingly, its characters, who are perhaps the only reassuring constant through the fast pace of the film. In particular, Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott, Restoration is really for them quite a drag yet really it’s possibly none the more fun (and indeed the most laughs) than their performances. Eugene Levy again was terribly hilarious as Jim’s dad and when he appeared on screen, it was pleasantly overwhelming.
Since it has such a huge pool of resurrected characters, it is also somewhat unnecessary to deal with the partially completed love stories. I particularly liked the way the character of Kevin progressed with Vicky and the character of Oz developed with Heather as well. Each and every party fulfills his or her promise with no results missing. In fact, even Finch has an advancement that he very much deserves. Sometimes it does become a little sad, but in such a nostalgic way as only this film can achieve. Most importantly, however, Reunion is a film with heart and one that wears its silliness of friendship and brotherhood on its sleeves and for all to see, just how the nice films are meant to be.
As regards its promotion or marketing, this third installment of the American Pie series Reunion, has relied more on its original audience than on advertising. And while it’s crazy to look at beginning from the Wedding what everybody, and I do mean everybody, has been up to without giving too much away it is a bad position to come into this franchise. However, even in regards to how one tells the story from American Pie Part 2, thank you – the movie sustains itself with amazing working elements hence all the elements powered by love for everything 90s. Yes, such toilet humor such as sick jokes and topic of sex has grown old for some time but all the cute faces are still relevant enough just as they were 13 years ago.
