A Danish couple puts their marriage, family and struggling restaurant at risk as they chase a coveted Michelin Star. A Taste of Hunger is so deliciously directed that it’s a treat for the eye. For artistry Christoffer Boe co-wrote and directed the film in an excellent way. Relationship drama at its core veers into soap opera levels of contrivance with fake duplicity. However, well-acted protagonist role manages to bring the story back to life.
Carsten (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Maggie (Katrine Gries-Rosenthal) have invested everything they own in their Copenhagen eatery. Carsten’s incredible culinary talents are showcased through Malus’ fine dining tasting menu. Maggie backs her husband’s artistic vision, handles finances, and raises their two kids; however, she believes his obsession with perfectionism has left her behind. The movie starts early evening on a day when something goes wrong horribly wrong on Mr Carlson part when he finds out that it was possibly served by one of Michelin food inspectors that he had been serving him spoiled meal.Carsten discovers that someone who might be a Michelin inspector just ate tainted food from his restaurant.A Michelin star would save Malus. But one bad review could destroy all they have worked for.Carsten begins yelling at his staff for the mistake while Maggie tries to find the critic and get him to give them another chance.
Two simultaneous stories run through A Taste of Hunger . While searching for the Michelin Star today ,a couple’s relationship is being interrogated via flashbacks in Carsten and Maggie’s marriage. The past events are broken down into categories Sweet,Sour,Fat,and Salt. The climax named Heat concludes this plot involving Michelin amidst melodramatically charged proceedings.Their fragile lives are thrown into disarray by an intense affair revealed under mysterious circumstances.
Christoffer Boe (Reconstruction, Journal 64) has made a stunningly beautiful movie. A Taste of Hunger is bathed in bright blue, green and red colors. The vivid lighting scheme varies with intensity of the scenes leaving one with dreamy feeling about it. For instance, Carsten’s perfect dishes are captured via delicate close-ups by Boe as well as his wonderful kitchen action. One would almost smell the aroma wafting from the screen. Boe then changes to dark tones and desolate atmosphere while their couple face hideous shows. It was a visionary artist who directed A Taste of Hunger.
The affair subplot becomes too sensational. In a marriage that’s already strained, cheating is expected to happen. A Taste of Hunger takes their romantic interlude to an over-the-top level which is absolutely stupid for any married people in a relationship characterized by infidelity. The characters involved, what happens, and its resolve could have been pulled from a saucy Mexican telenovela. The film looks fantastical … That’s granted but story told is very realistic up to some extent.Katrine Gries-Rosenthal and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are seasoned character actors who redeem the script from all its unnecessary luridness; they have great chemistry on set both as lovers and parents.
I made the mistake of watching A Taste of Hunger on an empty stomach.Drooling like a rabid dog.My mood wasn’t lifted much by dinner later , which was far from being four-star takeout. It is not just foodies who will enjoy A Taste of Hunger because this film has smart direction that makes it visually delicious in spite of taking a silly melodramatic turn.A taste of hunger features Danish dialogue subtitled in English.Being shot fancifully, though, the tale portrayed is such that you can relate to it realistically. That’s understood; however Katrine Gries-Rosenthal and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who have both had long careers playing smaller roles, add a lot of chemistry to the movie and make it so much more than just another sloppy melodrama.
I unwisely viewed A Taste of Hunger on an empty stomach. I found my mouth salivating like mad dog in this scene. Nor did it help that dinner afterwards wasn’t even remotely four-star takeout. Foodies cannot be satisfied by A Taste of Hunger alone as there is nice directing and visually appealing elements throughout its plot despite a stupid twist.A taste of hunger happens in Danish with English captions. It is produced by Zentropa with VOD and select theatrical distribution starting on January 28th from Magnolia Pictures.
